Difference between a Colonic & an Enema

There is a common misconception that a colonic is a high volume enema which is not completely true although colonics and enemas are therapies that both involve introducing water into the colon through to rectum in order to cleanse the colon. But there are some key differences between colonics and enemas:
Colonics cleanse the entire length of the colon. Enemas cleanse the lower part of the colon, the sigmoid and part of the descending colon.Colonics involve mutiple infusions of water into the colon. Enemas involve a single infusion of water into the colon.
With colonics, fecal matter leaves the body via a tube. The client does not see or smell the fecal matter during the session. At the end of the session, the client usually sits on a toilet, and usually passes any residual water and stools.
An enema, on the other hand involves a one-time infusion of water. It sits in the lower part of the colon for a period of time, and then the person sits on the toilet to expel it.
Colonics must be administered by a trained colon hydrotherapist and requires professional equipment. One colonic removes about the same amount of waste as 12 enemas. They are more productive because the entire colon is bathed in water throughout the entire session, which generally takes about an hour, but can be anywhere from 45-minutes to 2 hours. I wouldn’t recommend getting a colonic from anyone who says it can be done in less than 45-minutes. The amount of waste in the colon and throughout the body is unfathomable. You won’t believe it until you see it leaving you, and then you still won’t believe it. Some experts are of the opinion that we need approximately 15 colonics for every year we have been alive but I believe this to be an exagurated figure. A reputed colon hydrotherapist assesses the number of treatments required based on the reaction from the patients body after the first session. Anyone who recommends 5 to 10 sessions prior to the commencement of the first sesstion is someone you do not want to have as your colon hydrotherapist. They are clearly more interested in cleaning your wallet as compared to your colon!
Enemas do not have to be administered by a professional. Disposable enema kits are available in drugstores and online.
So what would you prefer... enemas or colonics?? The debate is on
Colon Hydrotherapy - Myths & Facts

There's a lot of information about colonics on the internet and not all of it is correct or helpful. Many people use the internet to find information on procedures and conditions they find slightly difficult to talk about, and this lens will help answer some questions, accurately.
As with any strictly non-medical procedure, there's bound to be controversy. After performing hundreds of colonics, my view is that traditional medicine doesn't help everybody.
In the UK, a typical GP appointment is about 5 minutes and GPs, however good they are, can't know everything about every disorder. I've come across some great doctors, pro-active about their patient's wellbeing but then there are those that just stick their constipated clients on laxatives and think that's the best treatment.
In my view, the best treatment is one that allows the patient to help themselves rather than override their natural bowel mechanisms. One client for example, suffered from awful constipation - she wouldn't go for a bowel movement for up to two weeks. Her doctor prescribed higher and higher doses of laxatives, which weren't doing her any favours. After a course of colonics, she now goes very regularly and doesn't rely on laxatives any more.
There are also people who say that your body does a good enough job of detoxing without needing colonics. That may have been true 20 years ago, but nowadays there are so many chemicals, pesticides and residues in all our foods and food packaging, that my feeling is that we need all the help we can get!
Now, on to myth number 1...
Myth #1 - Colonics are painful
Actually, no they're not!
Fact: Some people, especially if they have piles or are really tensed up, may experience a slightly strange sensation when the speculum is inserted.
Fact: Someone who is really constipated may experience some 'gripey' cramps. Telling your therapist will enable him or her to introduce water at a really low pressure, which will rehydrate matter in the bowel and reduce the cramping. Drink plenty of water every day and this should help too, and is the best natural detox anyway!
Fact: you don't have to be a hero! Your therapist will do some 'fills' - where the water still goes in, but won't come up. This will increase the pressure and you will feel a filling sensation but a reputable therapist will ALWAYS release the water when you tell them to. Just remember, you need to tell them how you are feeling!
Myth #2 - Colonics can perforate your bowel
Errr....no!
Fact: A normal bowel movement can build pressures of about 1.5 pounds per square inch.
Fact: A standard hospital enema applies pressure at about 2 pounds per square inch.
Fact: A gravity-fed colonic treatment introduces water at a pressure at about 2 pounds per square inch.
Fact: A machine-led colonic session introduces water at pressures normally between 0.8 to 1.5 PSI, according to how the therapist feels your body is responding.
Myth #3 - You can catch disease from having a colonic
Not if you research your therapist first...
Fact: Any reputable colonic hydrotherapist will ensure their water supply is UV, carbon and particle filtered.
Tip: Ask before booking.
Fact: Ensure your colonic is performed using a disposable speculum kit.
Tip: If a disposable kit isn't used, ask about the sterilization procedure in place and check with your local environmental health officer to see whether this procedure is appropriate.
Myth #4 - You will need to be near a toilet for ages after a colonic
Fact: After a colonic treatment, you will feel you need to have a bowel movement. You'll go to the toilet as normal and although what comes out will be watery, there's no 'leaking' or problems afterwards. You can go shopping, back to work or best of all, have some rest and relaxation! Occasionally, some people may find they do go to the toilet more frequently, but it won't be with a senses of urgency - so no problems there!
Myth #5 - Colonics are embarassing
Fact: At Kleen Kolonics, we are as discreet as possible. Our colonics room is en-suite, so there's changing and toilet facilities right where you need them.
We ask our clients to change into disposable treatment shorts, that is elasticated round the waist area. If you are wearing a t-shirt or blouse/shirt, you can keep this on (oh, and your socks too!).
The only 'embarrassing' bit is when we insert the speculum - we need to do a quick visual check for any piles etc... After that, your modesty is preserved.
Myth #6 - Colonics wash out all the good bacteria
Fact: This one is true!
Colonics wash out both the good and bad bacteria as well as any trapped gases, waste matter and toxins. You can tip the favour back in balance of the good bacteria by taking a probiotic supplement.
We always give our clients an oral probiotic supplement after treatment, to give them a head start!
Fact: If you want to take probiotics look out for the following:
Ensure it is a strain that will survive the stomach acid - no point in paying for something that doesn't do the job! Make sure there are no added sugars - these encourage the bad bacteria - just watch out for those drinks in the supermarket for sugar content. Some probiotic tablets, powders and capsules come in a UV-filtering container - no need to keep in the fridge, just out of direct sunlight.
Myth #7 - You'll lose weight after just one colonic
Fact: We always say you'll lose waist not weight during a colonic.
Lots of old waste materials are removed, and this will prevent more toxins from entering your system, allowing the liver to detoxify more efficiently and your digestive system to work at a more optimal level.
This has a knock on effect on your metabolism and makes you function more efficiently - all helping in a weight management campaign. There are some TV shows where people lose weight after colonics but this is after several in quick succession - not necessarily recommended for everyone.
Colonics should be part of a lifestyle overhaul, not viewed as a quick fix.
Myth #8 - You need lots of colonics
Fact: This depends entirely on why you are seeking colonic treatment.
In a healthy person wanting colonics for detox or for general health purposes, approximately one colonic every three months is enough.
If you are seeking colonic hydrotherapy due to IBS, heavy bloating or constipation, you may be recommended a course of colonics - a few in relatively quick succession, then regular tops-ups.

Colon Hydrotherapy Celebrities
It's probably a past time that he'd rather wasn't public knowledge, but it's been claimed that Leonardo DiCaprio is a fan of colonic irrigation. The 38 year-old actor is said to have the treatment on a regular basis after being introduced to it by former girlfriends, says a source.
“Leo’s been familiar with the treatment for years but he’s only recently started having it," a source told The Sun. “The models he’s dated always used to say how great they feel afterwards and after trying it once, he was hooked.” The 'Titanic' star's past love interests include Bar Refaeli, Gisele Bundchen and Victoria's Secrets model Erin Heatherton.
Celebrities who are big fans of internal cleansing include Demi Moore, Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt, Madonna, Lindsay Lohan and Ben Affleck. Many celebrities go for colon hydrotherapy. This method is offered by trained professionals. It involves repeatedly flushing the colon out with pure water, removing layers of accumulated toxic debris, taking physical pressure off the abdominal organs. A session leaves the client refreshed and energized. Parasites, candida yeast and other fungal forms are cleansed out as well. This gets rid of 'belly fat,' which so often is mainly comprised of the bulk of built-up wastes rather than adipose (fat) tissue. Along with a good exercise program, colon detoxification is what gives stars like Madonna and Brad Pitt a trim, healthy appearance. These methods also tone and condition the bowel, getting rid of constipation. A session leaves the client refreshed and energized. Having a healthy colon not only improves appearance, it increases energy. Despite an incredibly stressful life, the late Princess Diana was always poised and radiantly beautiful.
Another member of the royal family, Prince Charles, has infuriated the medical and pharmaceutical industry by endorsing the Gerson Therapy, an effective natural cancer treatment which includes body detox, colon cleansing and coffee enemas.
Achieve Maximum Attractiveness With Colon Cleansing and Other Peak Health Methods! No need to envy the 'beautiful people.' You can achieve the same abundant energy, charisma and great looks as the best of them! You don't have to own a yacht to avail yourself of the luxurious feeling of being at your healthiest and most beautiful. Recently, it occurred to me…more accurately, it finally resonated on a deeper level, that “breath” might be the order of the day. Meaning, it should be “encouraged” that human beings place 99% of their conscious thought into the “act” of breathing, until such time as one is merely “breathing/being” more often than not.
And the REASON for this forced attention is that when one is fully committed to the art of the (better but never best, Kaisen-ed) breath, one doesn’t spend much time talking, but rather listening and good things happen when one listens. Just ask Bob Dylan. Breath leads to laser-like focus that leads to self-realization.
While I had myself in a close to excruciating hip opener, during which one’s only way around that physical vortex of the “pain-body” is rather through it and voila, I remembered “breath” is the tether. Now…….how many breaths?
Baby steps.
I tell myself, “try one. But a good one. Not a half-assed, stressed out, defeatist, egoic breath. You might surprise yourself and be able to do a second breath. There’s no correct number. Don’t project. Don’t go forward or in reverse in your mind. You’re brain should not be guiding you. Be your breath. Envision your breath surrounding the source of pain in your body. The idea being that we stop being limited by our body at all. The soul has far more scintillating, jamboree-play-time eventualities.”
Then there is also the colon to discuss. The colon and yoga go together extremely well. And I might preface that by saying, “If you’re uncomfortable with poop talk, get over it.” Consider that in physics and biology, everything has a bi-product or effect. Whether it’s an up quark, electron, mineral like iron, gases such as helium, and the two most closely visible to humans-oxygen and water, all of these interactions have a somewhat natural, symbiotic homeostasis, no? At least it seems like they do.
Why else would there be doppleganger particles?
So, if we are “star stuff,” as has been proven, then surely we can appreciate the idea that each cell, function and organized activity in the body, depends on the process of taking in something, using it, and eliminating that which isn’t of value, ie., the bi-product. Efficient digestion, as a task and function (many argue this may be more complicated and primitive than first brain function) relies greatly on the proper balance of oxygen and water to enable an optionally functioning, sustainable organism (as opposed to an organism which is degenerating or aging).
Water makes up 60-80% of our body. It is composed of oxygen. Further, much of our bone marrow is manufactured at the base of the spine where the kundalini (accessed via breath) energy source resides. Our blood is needed to bring oxygen to every cell for communication. That’s why more of your neurotransmitters and lymphatic nodes are in located in the gut-all to support the integrity of the blood to that area. Water also facilitates conduction of electricity, ie energy to keep the whole cell and being moving.
What else is in that area?
A giant, 5 foot receptacle that stores waste. But toward what end? For how long? Is that the end of the story? How important is it that the receptacle be fully emptied? Should there be clearly defined states of “full” and “empty” or can it blend together after awhile, so that these definitive states of being are unrecognizable? Perhaps it is supposed to be emptied consistently and thoroughly at least 1-2-3 times per day. The alimentary canal and it’s wavelike movement or parastaltic action indicates that it is a one way road with a definite exit and off ramp. Like a freeway coming to an end with flashing caution lights indicating there isn’t anywhere else to go except forward.
Why so many times? Think of it as proportional to the size of the organism, whereby the frequency of ridding toxins, as with other organized systems within physics, depends on how busy and vital is the task. In a car, isn’t the exhaust directly proportional to the intake in order for a beautifully synchronized machine? Hummingbirds require as much nectar as they do merely for optimal wing function. Eating protein is for other functions. Over time, consider that it is the “blurred states” and lack of delineation, which define degeneration and aging. The threshold of toxic burden is finally reached. Cars eventually stop running.
The colon also absorbs water. Why again is water important??
Exactly.
Water, enables oxygen to disperse and conducts electricity. If you drink a lot of water and eat a lot of foods with water in them, awesome. If not, or not in a long time…then rehabilitating your receptacle with water is not only wise, but rather imperative. Just removing the obstacle to the colon’s two main functions: intermittently storing waste and absorbing water is enough to forestall dysfunction. The obstacle is waste, which is hanging around too long. The colon can’t be absorbing water properly if there is a physical and mechanical obstacle in the way. Can the medical community agree that a generous portion of rich, developed country’s citizens are chronically constipated and dehydrated? Is the laxative industry a 700 million dollar revenue stream? Is Michael Bloomberg pissing people off with his focus on diet soda?
If your health is at the point that an organ…residing so close to the bone marrow, which is made of smooth muscle, can’t be exercised, hydrated, and loosened of accumulated bi-product with water, indeed you may be trouble. But few people fall in to this category. If you are in this category, bummer for you. You may be at a loss. The point is to not find your self in this situation. Prior to this, colonics are intuitive. You are water. You are oxygen. Your colon is made of water so how in the hell can water be bad for it??? Such ridiculousness. Quit worrying about the good bacteria and electrolytes. You probably already obliterated the good bacteria. Start with a cleaner slate and then, re-establish from there. You don’t put a bandage on a festering, infected wound before cleansing it do you? Your electrolytes can easily restored, should that be necessary. Studies show electrolytes are unaffected.
Lastly, we have all witnessed, with our own eyes how the mismanagement of environmental waste and bi-product has disaffected our planet. The same scenario is occurring in the colon. There are x-rays to prove this. If you believe that you are not in this category, you might want to revisit your assumption.
